The Story

Tony Award-winning Falsettos is a tribute to family and its many forms; a playful interrogation of faith and identity; and a celebration of the beauty, complexity, and necessity of love.

Marvin has left his wife, Trina, for his male lover; Trina has married Marvin’s therapist; and their son, Jason, is grappling with his parents’ divorce and his looming bar mitzvah. Everyone’s world has been upended and now they must explore what their new lives may hold. Featuring a sung-through score and set against the backdrop of the AIDS epidemic, Falsettos is a humorous and heartbreaking web of ex-spouses, co-parents, new lovers, and the lesbians next door.

MARVIN: (Late 30s to late 40s. C3- Bb4) Jewish. Father to Jason, divorced from Trina, now in a steamy relationship with Whizzer. Desperately wants to keep a tight-night family. *This role is precast and will be played by Scott Esposito

TRINA: (Female presenting, Age 30s-40s. B3-E5) Soprano with belt; Marvin’s ex-wife and mother to their son Jason. She has strong traditional Jewish values. Charmingly neurotic in her effort to understand the conflicting feelings she has in the aftermath of her divorce. She consults Mendel, her husband’s psychiatrist and eventually marries him.
JASON: (Male presenting, age 11-13, voice unchanged G3-D5) Marvin and Trina’s son – bookish and awkward – Jason’s impending Bar Mitzvah, his parents’ divorce and Whizzer’s arrival into his life leave him confused, angry and trying to sort it all out.

WHIZZER: (Male presenting, age late 20s-30s, E3-C5) Athletic, charming, and confident. He’s diagnosed with AIDS in the earliest months of the epidemic. Has a tempestuous relationship with Marvin, but ultimately loves him and forms a special friendship with his son, Jason.

MENDEL: (Male presenting, age 30s-40s, C3-B4) Marvin’s psychiatrist who marries Trina and enters into the tumultuous world of her life with her son while struggling with his own feelings. While Jewish, his values are less traditional and more modern.

DR CHARLOTTE: (Female presenting, age 30s-40s. F3-F5) One of the ‘lesbians from next door’ – Charlotte is a dedicated doctor alarmed by the mysterious illness that is killing her gay male patients. Tough, but extremely nurturing and very much in love with her partner, Cordelia.

CORDELIA: (Female presenting, age 30s-40s. A3-A5) The other ‘lesbian from next door’ – Cordelia is Dr. Charlotte’s partner – she runs her own kosher catering business despite being a self-proclaimed “shiksa”, is very keen on making a nice home – but also wants to be useful and valued for her contribution to the world.
