The Story

Hedwig and the Angry Inch tells the tale of how a “slip of a girlyboy” from communist East Berlin, Hanschel, becomes the “internationally ignored song stylist” known as Hedwig after a botched sex change operation. The show daringly breaks the fourth wall, as Hedwig directly tells the audience of her past tribulations and heartbreak in the form of an extended monologue paired with rock songs. With a little help from her band and her back-up singer Yitzhak, Hedwig examines her quest for her other half, for love, and ultimately for her identity. Featuring a groundbreaking rock musical score by Stephen Trask, Hedwig and the Angry Inch is hilarious, harrowing, and essentially uplifting for anyone who’s ever felt different.

Character Breakdown

*The age range and gender for each character is flexible and all ethnicities and body types will be considered. Artists of all ethnic, cultural, sexual and gender identities are strongly encouraged to audition. We encourage all LGBTQ and non-binary artists to audition. Accents do not need to be perfected by auditions but we would like to see you attempt them. A dialect coach will be available for the production.

Hedwig: (Male/They/Them, 20-50. Rock Tenor b4) East German rock singer and front woman of The Angry Inch; formerly Hansel, a slip of a girly boy who grew up in communist East Berlin, fell in love with an American GI; became Hedwig and underwent a botched sex change operation in order to marry and move to the states; glamorous, charismatic and always commanding even when at her most bitchy or vulnerable; has had high highs and low lows; must have a convincing East German accent; actor must be able to dexterously shift from persona to persona (Hedwig's mother, husband, rock icon ex-lover, Tommy Gnosis).
Yitzhak: (Female/They/Them, 20-50. Mezzo-Soprano belt to G) Hedwig's Croatian male husband and roadie/back-up singer; he is Hedwig's vocal sparring partner; theirs is an emotional and at times abusive relationship; the actress playing Yitzhak should be believable as a butch male but one that chafes at the bonds of traditional masculinity and longs to explore his feminine, creative side; very strong singer with rock and roll vibe; must have a convincing Balkan(Eastern European) accent.
